Kay brings her love for Hip Hop as strong on her skin as it is in her soul. Transitioning through different parts of Boston while growing up, she feels like the city has played a huge role in her connection with music, allowing her to learn different avenues, connect with other artists, gain confidence.
As a child, teenager and all the way into college her main focus was basketball, but at some point she felt an urge to pursue her real passion, the one she actually wanted to stick with for the rest of her life.
Kay wrote her first song when she was only 10 years old. Coming from a very musical family, inspiration to make art was everywhere in her atmosphere. Hip Hop has always been in the background of her life, but it was in 2021 when she decided to take it to a professional level. She found a studio and that’s where she records her songs, gets creative, writes and collaborates. But it’s mostly outside, close to nature, where she feels greatly moved and inspired to create.
Kay is not only this strong, authentic and opinionated artist. In her personal life, she has always shown the same personality. She’s been aware of her queerness since the age of 5, when she told her mom she didn’t like to be dressed up all girly and was ready to start dressing herself. At the time, she didn’t know what exactly bothered her, but knew something didn’t click.
It took a while for her mom to fully understand, but she has always been accepting and has never made her feel like she was inappropriate or wrong. Kay believes that this was key to help her become confident and self aware, considering that outside of the household the world can be a hostile and unfair environment. That’s also why Kay believes it’s important to find a community, people who you can connect with and who make you feel safe, appreciated and respected.
